PUTRAJAYA: Developments on the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) will be announced once due process concerning the project is completed, says Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
He said there will be an official announcement and a media briefing on the latest progress concerning the project.
“Please wait for the official announcement. We have due process to complete. At this juncture, things are in progress, and I will only announce when everything is confirmed, ” he told reporters after presenting star ratings to driving institutes on Tuesday (Sept 8).
Dr Wee was asked if the alignment of ECRL would be reverted to its original alignment that was proposed during the Barisan Nasional administration.
Asked to comment on reports claiming that the cost of the project would escalate if the government decides to maintain the original alignment, the minister again asked the media to wait for a full briefing on the matter.
“The problem is you take what is based on a report without quoting me or the ministry’s secretary-general. That’s why please wait for the full briefing.
“It (briefing) will be done as soon as possible. I will stand for one or two hours and you can ask any questions you like, ” he said.
According to a report, the proposal of the realignment of ECRL could potentially add a further RM20bil to the cost of the project.
The ECRL alignment is divided into three sections – Section A from Kota Baru to Dungun, Section B from Dungun to Mentakab and Section C from Mentakab to Port Klang.
Dr Wee had told the Dewan Rakyat that the cost and environmental concerns are among issues that must be resolved before the alignment of the ECRL can be finalised.
